Overview

A controversial topic is presented. The pupils form an inner and an outer circle and stand or sit opposite to each other. The youngsters are now given a specific, short amount of time to discuss the topic with their partner. The circles represent two different points of view: the outer circle position A, the inner circle position B. After the time has elapsed, one of the circles rotates and the new pairs discuss again according to the given time. By repeating this process, the pupils receive many different arguments from both sides on the topic and can practice and develop their own discus-sion skills.

Learning objectives

  • The students critically examine a topic and develop a basis for discussion.
  • The students learn how to conduct a structured discussion.

Material

  1. Space for two large circles (standing or chairs for the circles).
  2. Flipchart/chalkboard for the presentation of the topic.
  3. Worksheets for summarizing all opinions at the end.
  4. Possibly an acoustic signal.
